Historical Background
Madda Walabu University (MWU) is one of the higher educational institutions in Ethiopia. The university is named after a place that is located 227 km southwest of the zonal town Robe. Historically, the region is deeply connected with the Oromo people, particularly the culture of the “Gada” system, as described by elders and researchers. The name Madda Walabu is now widely recognized, represented by Madda Walabu Stadium, Madda Walabu Cultural Band, the university itself, and other smaller businesses that aim to keep the place's legacy alive in the public memory.
Founded in 1999 E.C., Madda Walabu University is a relatively young institution but one of the fastest growing in terms of student admission, expansion of academic programs, and campuses. The surrounding geography, known for its fertile lands, is often referred to as the "Ukraine of Africa," and it makes the university a desirable place to live and study. Additionally, the university is situated near several tourist attractions, which further enhances its appeal.
